THE TRAMS OF BENDIGO AND BALLARAT

The Ballarat and Bendigo Tramways have been in operation since 1887 and 1890, respectively, using horse, battery, steam and finally electric from 1903. The owning Company also operated trams in Geelong. After long wrangles the trams ceased operating in all three cities in 1972 but with vociferous opposition from locals in the former two. Under volunteers, both have continued to operate albeit on single shortened routes.

Bendigo is the largest and retained the whole fleet operating daily, under the auspices of 'The Talking Trams', from The Gold Mine to North Bendigo. Superb craftsmen and volunteers operate and maintain the fleet which also now restores rescued trams from anywhere in Australia. We travel the whole route and then view the tram fleet and also have a close look around the Workshops
