SAN FRANCISCO part 1

The Cable Cars are synonymous with San Francisco and have been operating since the 1870s as the safest way of coping with the steep hills.

Due to great Public support in the 1950s three routes survived as the Powell & Mason and Powell & Hyde lines, with their single ended cars that are turned at each end, and the California Street line with its double ended cars. In 1982 the whole system was completely upgraded.

On this DVD we take a gripperman's view on the Powell & Mason line followed by the same on the California line along with street views. We also look round the cable Car Museum and Winding room and have a unique view of a damaged cable being repaired. Also a view inside the Car Barn where the wooden brake blocks are changed daily and where all the cars are stored.
